I got sick with a stomach bug right after I discovered I’d be able to race again in October so I couldn’t jump straight back into training. This has been my training so far after recovering last week:
Wednesday (3/5/23)
- Slow run – 2.7km, average pace 9:15
- Boxing at Tribe
Thursday
- Easy strength training to get back into the routine. Two rounds of:
- Jumping Jacks
- Push-ups
- Squats
- Sit-ups
- Burpees
- Followed by two rounds of:
- Farmer’s walk
- Pull-ups
- Banded row
- Bicep curls
- Stair climb: 16 floors.
Friday
- B2B Spin classes for more endurance training. I must get used to the long workouts again.
Saturday
- Spin – okay, technically, I should be doing less spin and more running but this was for fun.
Sunday
I got hit with another bug but it wasn’t a serious one – just a scratchy throat and no other symptoms. Tested for Covid and it was negative. I decided to press on with the training.
- Hiking with the team: 6.3km; elevation 260m. It wasn’t supposed to be a hard one but it felt hard. The knees are not used to the terrain any more.

Monday (8/5/23)
The scratchy throat became a cough without a fever so I did a light ride on the bike – Tempus Fugit in Watopia (about as flat as flat gets).
Tuesday
Back to Boxing because I have passes to use up. I contemplated a light run before class but gave up on the idea because I could feel the fatigue and my burn rate has been elevated. My body is likely fighting the residual infection so it would be unwise to push too hard.
Wednesday
Strength workout with 3 rounds of the following (in sets of four):
- Farmer’s walk (20kg; 10kg in each hand – max weights I have on hand)
- Sit-ups
- Seated banded row
- Pull-ups (assisted – red band)
- Deadlifts (20kg)
- Tricep press
- Towel-grip Inverted Row
- Russian Twist
- Side abs leg lift
- Inner-thigh lift
- Donkey kicks
- Fire Hydrant kicks
The fatigue was bad and I confess I really didn’t feel like pushing. The last set of four was not planned but I did it in the end because I was too tired to do any more Spartan-related moves.

Thursday
Back to Boxing – like I said, I got passes to use up. The arm work is not exactly Spartan-related but it could help my spear throw – or is that wishful thinking? The mind thought the moves were not hard but the body begged to differ. Was it fatigue from yesterday’s strength training? Again, this is something I’m going to have to get used to since I’ll be out there two days in a row for the Weekend Trifecta.
Friday
I haven’t planned anything for tomorrow, but I think a rest day is in order. I dug out my Spartan Fit Book by Joe De Senna and I plan to start working on the 30-day Beginner’s Program starting next week. Maybe. We’ll see.
